MIDLAND - A local animal sanctuary could use a little help from its friends.
Ralphy’s Retreat is holding a volunteer work day Saturday to help repair some of its infrastructure and homes badly damaged by the recent ice storm and subsequent power outage.
“We are reaching out to you with a heavy heart and a desperate plea for help,” the animal sanctuary located near Waverley notes.
“Since the start of 2025, Ralphy’s has been struck by crisis after crisis. Recently, our sanctuary was hit by a severe ice storm that caused extensive damage across our property. The storm has left our animal housing, fencing, and other critical infrastructure in need of repair and we've been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the destruction.”
As well, huge snowfalls this winter combined with recent heavy rains have contributed to the flooding of animal pens, making the cleanup process even more difficult and “our beloved animals surrounded in mud.”
For most organizations that would be plenty, but Ralphy’s recently suffered even more bad luck.
“We had a car drive through our cow field last week causing additional damage,” the sanctuary says, pointing out the vehicle driver hasn't yet offered an apology or a donation to help towards repairing the damage.
Many of Ralphy’s residents are aged, have special needs or come from situations of abuse and neglect.
“The extreme stress over the past few months have greatly impacted their normally peaceful sanctuary,” the sanctuary notes.
“We are humbly asking for any assistance you may be able to offer. Whether it's financial support, materials for repairs, or volunteers to help with cleanup, any help would be invaluable to us in this critical time.”
Saturday’s volunteer day runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A vegan lunch and refreshments will be provided.
“This work day will include a lot of heavy lifting and moving,” the sanctuary adds. “We will need strong arms and anyone with chainsaws, wood chippers, truck and trailers to bring brush to the dump.
“Thank you for considering our plea. Your support means the world to the animals in our care, and we would be incredibly grateful for anything you can do to help us rebuild.”
“Those interested in attending the work day are encouraged to email Ralphy’s at ralphysanimalsanctuary@gmail.com.
