Ayr residents mistake pooping heron for sinister drone

Police say no criminal activity has occurred after determining that substance dropped on homes and cars in Ayr last August was feces from a heron

A blue heron pooping over homes, cars and properties in Ayr in August prompted a police investigation into harassing drone activity.

CAMBRIDGE - Police have concluded a substance initially believed to have been dropped by a remotely operated drone over a residential neighbourhood in Ayr last summer is, in fact, heron feces.

Multiple reports to police on Aug. 23 claimed a drone was engaging in harassing behaviour and causing property damage in the area of Stanley Street and Main Street in Ayr.

But after an expert from the University of Guelph analyzed the substance and determined it was simply bird poop, Waterloo Regional Police Service say they don't believe a drone was involved at all and no criminal activity had occurred.

Residents who called police initially said "a first-person view drone" was spotted on several occasions between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., flying over residential homes and dropping an unknown substance onto houses, vehicles, and property.
